Fish Essay
A.1 pt for identifying correct time period (1965-1970) and 1 point for calculating rate of decline (100 thousand metric tons per year)

B. 1 point for identifying a cause and 1 point for describing it.
bottom trawling-high by catch
Long line fishing-cheaper and easier to implement
Using drift nets/gill nets/purse seines-large by catch, depletes fisheries
Using sonar- damages central nervous system of fish, reveals location of large quantity of fish, can target specific species
C. 1 point for naming specific international regulation
D. 3 points can be earned by giving commons, human activity that affects that commons, and practical activity to manage that commons
Rainforest, forest, rivers and lakes, Antarctica, mountains

Deforestation, fishing, mineral mining, fossil fuel pollution, farming

Practical activity must be feasible and pertinent to common - ex. Education of the public, laws, agencies

A) Graph must have points, axes and curves labeled. The points must be connected, the scale must include all data points and all the points must be graphed.

B) The growth rate in 1950 is 1% and there are 14 births per thousand in 1977. Correct calculations 22-12/1000 and 0.4%=x-10/1000 should be present.

C) Improved sanitation, healthcare, reducing epidemic disease, improved facilities.
Pyramid effect, large young population, transitioning demographics, reduction of child mortality rate

D) Rule of 70, doubling rate 28 years, doubles twice in 56 years for 10 million people

Growth rate 2.5%, 1.025^56 * 2.5 million = 9.96 million

- depletes juvenile population (1 pt)
- not selective of age or size (1 pt)
- not selective of species (1pt)

Long-line fishing- casts a line out to catch a fish by line (1 pt)
- depletes by catching non-target species (1 pt)

Drift nets- large nets along the surface or ocean floor (1 pt)
- catches everything in net, depletes by catching non-target species (1 pt)

SONAR- uses sonar noise to locate large amounts of fish (schools) (1 pt)
- easily locates and depletes the schools they locate (1pt)
- not selective of maturity of fish they locate or strength (1pt)
